Protection at the Front Door: Why Fire-Rated Doors Matter

Critical Protection in a Fire

During a structure fire, seconds matter. Flames spread quickly, smoke fills spaces, and heat can become unbearable in moments. A fire-rated entry door can make all the difference—slowing the spread of flames, blocking dangerous smoke, and providing valuable time to escape safely.

Fire-rated doors are required in many settings: apartment units, stairwells, garage-to-home entryways, and between building sections in both residential and commercial properties. At Studio 4 Showroom, we offer ProVia’s tested fire-rated doors that combine life-saving protection with lasting durability and design flexibility.

How Fire-Rated Doors Work

Fire-rated doors are designed and tested to withstand extreme heat—over 1400°F—for 20 to 90 minutes depending on the model. This delay helps contain fire and smoke, keeping escape routes clear and reducing property damage.

Required Components for Protection:

  • Self-closing & self-latching hardware – ensures the door seals shut in an emergency.

  • Spring Bommer hinges or closers – allow automatic closure.

  • Q-Lon® fire-rated weatherstripping – blocks smoke and heat.

  • Positive pressure tested construction – resists force from fire and heat.
